In the event of a fire:

  • Safety is the priority. Ensure everyone leaves the building immediately.
  • Call the fire department from outside, as soon as you can.
  • Wait in a safe place outside the building, such as a car parked outside, or neighbour’s home.
  • Do not re-enter the building without approval from the authorities.
Reporting the Claim

Call Orr Insurance & Investment at the first opportunity, or contact the insurance company directly at the 1-800 number they provided with your policy. A Claims Representative from your insurer will work with you to confirm the details of the loss and guide you throughout the claims process.

Prepare a list and description of what has been damaged or lost. Take pictures or video if possible. You may be asked to provide proof of ownership and/or original invoices to support your claim. Do not dispose of damaged personal property without first notifying us.

For a financial estimate of the damages, you could use a preferred vendor of the insurance company or you may call a local contractor of your choice. Estimates will be reviewed by the insurer.

Restoration work – if the work is completed by a preferred vendor of the company, the insurance company will warranty the work of the contractor.

In the event of water damage:

  • Stay safe. Do not enter a flooded basement unless you have turned off the main electrical supply.
  • Protect your property – After ensuring the electricity in the affected area is turned off at the source, you may take reasonable steps to prevent further damage.
  • Do not handle items damaged by sewer backup.
  • For all other water sources, remove property that has not been damaged from the affected areas or move them off the floor.
  • Make sure valuables and important documents are stored in a safe, dry place.
  • If the problem occurs in winter, maintain normal heat and avoid raising the thermostat.
  • If the plumbing or heating system is frozen, turn off the water supply before restoring heat.
